Respirable Crystalline Silica Requirements and Compliance
BJ Services is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for our team members, customers and suppliers.
The Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) has issued new respirable crystalline silica standards that require employers to mitigate exposure to respirable crystalline silica and monitor health to protect workers. OSHA will begin enforcing most provisions related to our industry June 23, 2018.
Specific to hydraulic fracturing operations, engineering controls to limit exposures to the new permissible exposure limit must be implemented by June 23, 2021.
How is BJ complying with the standards?
BJ Services will operate in full compliance with all requirements of OSHA’s respirable crystalline silica standard for general industry and maritime (29 CFR 1910). Some of the main requirements with which BJ Services is complying include:
- Implementing engineering controls such as our enclosed blenders
- Testing and monitoring of exposure levels by a third-party
- Implementing a medical screening program for initial and repeat testing.
